Bowls in your Community
With the 2016 Just Retirement World Indoor Bowls Championships beginning today, Friday 8th January, it seems a good time to raise the subject of this fantastic sport and the impact it can have in any given community.
Whilst there is a long line of bowlers who will believe they are capable of playing on the World Bowls Tour’s famous blue rink, for many, the local bowls club is simply a social hub where they can meet friends whilst taking part in a friendly sport. Having spent almost ten years working directly with bowls clubs, many face the challenge of decreasing membership against increasing running costs.
Potters Resort and the Potters Friends Foundation are proud to celebrate the sport of bowls and the camaraderie, social impact and other benefits it brings to thousands of communities. It is all those things in which Brian Potter MBE saw the opportunity back in the 1980’s to make Potters Resort the Home of World Bowls. Our continued support has come in the way of sponsorship, recruitment, roadshows, membership drives and club visits, all built on solid relationships with the bowls associations.
If you are reading this, firstly, we hope you will tune in to The BBC and enjoy the 2016 Just Retirement World Indoor Bowls Championships over the next 17 days. Secondly, if you enjoy what you see, keep an open mind as to potentially visiting your local club, be it indoor or outdoor. The combination of a friendly, sociable atmosphere and a sport for people of all ages and standards is very unique and something that is enjoyed by over 1 million people in England alone. Having visited so many clubs in the past, I have always been taken aback by what clubs can offer in terms of facilities and social events, but most importantly, by the warm welcome received.
