Inspirational night at Stars of Lowestoft & Waveney awards
An awards ceremony celebrating some of the finest examples of unsung heroes, hard-working volunteers and inspirational community champions in the Lowestoft and Waveney area was held on Thursday 11th October 2018.
Potters Friends Foundation sponsored the Charity Worker of the Year Award category at the Stars of Lowestoft & Waveney awards and had the pleasure of announcing the winner, with Wrentham Firefighters taking the trophy in the category.
The firefighters raised £3,200 after completing a gruelling charity bike ride in June, travelling almost 400 miles across the country from Llangefni in Wales to Lowestoft for the ‘Wrentham Fire Ride’, raising money for The Fire Fighters Charity and Mind. They work hard all year round, but had a particularly demanding Summer with the hot weather leading to woodlands and fields catching fire.
There were more than 200 nominations for the awards, and other winners on the night included schoolboy Daniel Jillings, Lowestoft volunteer coastguards, Beccles community volunteers, the Ashley School Academy Trust, Lowestoft Festival chairman Mark Lanham, Special Olympics skier George Burroughs, PC Stephen Vaughan and Nipper, the volunteer gardeners at Carlton Court in Lowestoft and George Leslie Jackson. Two separate special recognition awards were also presented to mental health campaigner Sue Willgoss and Nick Ayers, a community safety partner and lifeguard supervisor at the RNLI.
Our CEO, Nathan Moore, presented the Wrentham Firefighters with their award and said: “The nominees and overall winners are recognised because they really are local heroes and do it without expecting any recognition. We were thrilled to be involved in the evening, and support such fantastic individuals and groups of people who make a real difference in their community.”
BBC Radio Suffolk presenter Mark Murphy was compère for the evening.
